Domain expiry lookup (RDAP)
RDAP returns registration data as JSON over HTTPS. ICANN made it the definitive source for gTLD registration data in January 2025, replacing port-43 WHOIS. Each TLD's RDAP server is listed in the IANA bootstrap file.
Check a domain (use the "Domain expiry" link under the form) or call GET /v1/domain-expiry?domain=example.com for registrar, created/updated/expiry dates, days until expiry, EPP status, nameservers and DNSSEC.
Why expiry still bites
- Auto-renew fails silently when a card expires.
- Domains bought by former staff renew to a mailbox nobody reads.
- Once a domain lapses, mail and SSO break at once, and a drop-catcher can register it.
Some ccTLDs don't run RDAP yet; the API then says so instead of guessing. Sources: IANA RDAP bootstrap, ICANN RDAP.
